Emma Louise Davies creates sculptures and drawings exploring themes relating to nature, human interaction with the environment and the human condition. Her formal education has included a Bachelor of Fine Art (jewellery major) from the College of Fine Art, University of NSW in 1995, and an Advanced Diploma of Furniture Design at the North Coast Institute of TAFE in 2013. While continuing to make artworks and exhibit, Davies worked in arts administration for many years in state and regional galleries in the NT, QLD, ACT and NSW. She now works full-time in her art practice from a small farm in the Coffs Harbour hinterland on Gumbaynggirr country.
Davies’ artworks have won prizes and have been selected into national and regional art exhibitions and competitions. Most recently, in 2023, her sculpture was accepted into the national Art Space Urunga Small Sculpture Prize, and her drawing was selected for the National Capital (now, Contemporary) Art Prize. Another highlight was the selection of her design for a playable public sculpture for Coffs Harbour’s Jetty4Shores project which was fabricated and installed in 2018.
Davies’ artworks are in the collection of Coffs Harbour’s regional gallery Yarrila Arts and Museum (YAM), as well as private collections. She regularly participates in group shows and has been invited to exhibit at YAM, in early 2025. Her sculptural practice encompasses sculpting with wax to cast into bronze, as well as fabrication using wood and steel - materials which she salvages from her local area wherever possible. Her drawing practice includes charcoal and mixed media on paper as well as pyrography.
